Denver City Council members are apparently ready to take a moral stand against the companies that run many of the city's halfway houses. The council voted last night against renewing contracts with community corrections companies CoreCivic and GEO Group. The rejection of the contracts creates the possibility that more than 500 people will either be sent back to prison or released on parole once the six facilities run by the companies are closed. Opponents of the contracts criticized the companies for lack of transparency and non-competitive practices.
