Delays Continue Through Wednesday Morning After I-70 Rockslide

Although I-70 east of Glenwood Springs is open to both eastbound and westbound traffic, motorists will continue to encounter intermittent delays through tomorrow morning, Wednesday, May 22. CDOT crews are clearing the interstate of rocks and boulders that came down off the Glenwood Canyon walls this morning.

Rock fall mitigation crews who specialize in rock blasting are working to downsize and break up at least 10 large boulders to more easily move them from the right westbound lane of I-70. Blasting was started in the afternoon and should be completed tomorrow. Traffic will be held when blasting occurs.

CDOT maintenance crews will also continue work on damaged road and damaged structures which include numerous rock fall impact potholes, a section of median, damaged concrete barrier and damaged structure rail.

Travelers are urged to drive with caution through the area. Both eastbound lanes (toward Denver) are fully open, but motorists traveling westbound (toward Glenwood Springs) are being funneled into one lane through the rock fall area.
