One dead, eight injured in shooting at STEM school in Highlands Ranch

One student has died and eight students were injured following a shooting at STEM School Highlands Ranch. Two suspects are in custody. One of them has been identified by the Douglas County Sheriff's Office as 18-year-old Devon Erickson. The shooting occurred in the high school portion of the K-12 school.

Victims were taken to Littleton Adventist Hospital, Children's Hospital Colorado in Aurora and Sky Ridge Medical Center. At least four victims have been released from hospitals while others remain with conditions ranging from stable to critical.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office tweeted that they were responding to an "unstable situation" at the school just before 2pm. All schools in Douglas County were put on lockdown while the situation was under investigation.

"I have to believe that the quick response of the officers helped to save lives," said Douglas Country Sheriff Tony Spurlock.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office is working on getting search warrants to investigate the suspects' vehicle and homes. According to the sheriff, one handgun was recovered on the scene. The sheriff's office says both suspects were students at the school.
