Governor Jared Polis has signed the controversial Red Flag gun bill that allows courts to issue extreme risk protection orders to temporarily seize guns from people found to be mentally unstable and dangerous to themselves or others.
Polis was surrounded by people who lost loved ones to gun violence as he signed the bill into law.
Polis believes the new law will be used sparingly and in a targeted way, perhaps just 100 to 150 times a year. Colorado is the 15th state to adopt an extreme protection order law.
Several Colorado counties opposed the law and some have declared themselves Second Amendment Sanctuaries saying the law is unconstitutional.
