State Senate Passes Red Flag Gun Bill

The State Senate has passed the so-called Red Flag Gun Bill by a narrow 18-17 margin. The bill would allow a court to order the temporary removal of guns from the possession of a person deemed to be a threat to themselves or to others. The bill has already passed the Colorado House but will go back to that body to approve changes made by the Senate. That is expected to happen quickly. Governor Polis has signaled that he will sign the bill when it gets to his desk.

Several Colorado counties have gone on record saying they will not enforce the law. A few have declared themselves 2nd Amendment Sanctuaries. Earlier this week Governor Polis said Colorado is a local control law enforcement state. He said counties and cities have a right to prioritize how they use their resources to enforce laws. He noted that, while jaywalking is illegal, few police agencies write tickets for the crime because it is such a low priority.
