Thurs Blogcast: Parents need to know; Scott Lincicome on non-competes

Just One Thing: Trump and Social Media

Elon Musk reinstated Donald Trump's Twitter account but Trump has not used it. One wonders if Trump will similarly not sue his Facebook or Instagram accounts now that Meta, the parent company of both of those social media platforms, has announced that they're also reinstating him but with "guardrails."

It's probably a slightly tough decision for Trump, even apart from the contract he has with "his" own platform, Truth Social, that significantly limits what he can do on other platforms except for political speech (which is probably almost all of his speech anyway.) After all, if Trump is active on other platforms that makes it much less interesting for people to be involved with Truth Social which in turn lowers the value of the platform...which I've always thought is likely to end up close to worthless anyway. But if he's not active on the other platforms then very few people will read what he's writing because so few people, especially so few people who aren't already part of the hardcore Trump base, are on Truth Social. (I think I have an account but I think the only time I logged in was the day I made the account...and I'm not even sure of that.)

I suspect that if he makes significant progress toward becoming the Republican nominee for president, he will be forced to go where the eyeballs are, and that's Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc.

Today's Guests

Lindsay Datko is a Jefferson County mom, educator, founder of JeffCo Kids First, and part of my Leadership Program of the Rockies family. We're going to discuss the efforts her group has made, with some actual success, in making sure JeffCo schools abide by laws governing questions that can be asked of kids and required inclusion of parents in conversations about things like a kid going by a different name and gender at school than at home.

Scott Lincicome is the Director of General Economics and Trade at the Cato Institute and one of my very favorite writers and thinkers about the intersection of politics and economics. Today we're going to discuss why it's not as obvious as some want you to believe that non-compete agreements should be banned by the Federal Trade Commission.
