Weds Blogcast: Let's not kill an innocent man; Homicide Hunters

Just One Thing

10 Republican members of the House voted to impeach Donald Trump in 2021. Of the ten, four did not run for re-election. Of the six who did, only two won, and only one of the two didn’t have an opponent endorsed by Trump. And they were both in "top-two" primaries which are not the usual kind of primary election because they allow two people of the same party to make it to the general election.

Yesterday, the last and most famous of the 10 went down to defeat as Wyoming Representative Liz Cheney lost her primary race by a whopping 37%. Given that pretty much all of her campaign ads were about Trump rather than about her opponent, it seemed clear that she wasn’t trying to win an unwinnable fight. I admire Cheney’s courage regarding January 6 but Wyomingites were souring on her even before that as she developed a reputation for spending precious little time in her state. That’s hard enough to pull if in most places but impossible when you’re the only congresscritter for a whole state. What's next for Cheney? Rumors of a presidential run...I think that's Quixotic at best. Maybe heading an anti-MAGA superPAC? At some point what seemed like a principled stand will start to feel, even to me, like personal vendetta and we will want to (to quote Laura Ingraham regarding Trump) "turn the page".

Don Knight is an attorney (from Littleton, CO) representing Richard Glossip, a man who may be a month away from execution by the state of Oklahoma for a crime that it looks increasingly likely that he didn't commit. Even pro-death penalty hardcore conservatives in Oklahoma are saying they will move for the repeal of the death penalty in the state if Glossip's case is not carefully re-examined prior to Mr. Glossip being put to death.

(Maybe Joe Kenda can help Don Knight find the killer!)

This kind of story is why if I cannot in good conscience support the death penalty even though there are plenty of bad people who need killing.

Other Stuff

I usually post a lot of other links to topics but today I'm going to request that whatever time you'd spend on those other things you spend instead reading some of the links above about the case of Richard Glossip. This is an exceedingly important story, even for those of us who are not in Oklahoma.
