Good things keep happening for the Colorado Avalanche.

Saturday night at Ball Arena, the Avs defeated the Carolina Hurricanes, 7-4. It is Colorado's ninth consecutive win and the Avs cliched the top spot in the Western Conference. They also clinched the Central division title.

And oh yeah, the newest Avalanche player also chipped in a goal.

Forward Ben Meyers, who just signed with the team after finishing his third season at the University of Minnesota, scored his first NHL goal in his first NHL game. Meyers was Big Ten Player of the Year this season, scoring 17 goals and adding 24 assists.

The Avalanche again came out firing. J.T. Compher put the Avs on the scoreboard with a power play goal at 6:53 of the first period. Then Nathan MacKinnon scored his 30th goal of the season at 10:48.

Each team scored three goals in the second period, including Meyers, who put home a rebound at 2:21.

The Avs are now 55-14-6 and lead the NHL with 116 points.
