Rockies Agree To Contracts With SS Iglesias, RP Colome

Major League teams are quickly making moves after the league and the players union get a new collective bargaining agreement done.

The Colorado Rockies have reportedly come to one-year contract agreements with two veterans, shortstop Jose Iglesias and relief pitcher Alex Colome according to multiple reports.

Iglesias, 32, spent last year with the Angels and Red Sox. In 137 games, he hit .271 with nine home runs and 48 RBI. He had 27 doubles, two triples and stole five bases in seven attempts.

His time with the Red Sox was his second stint with the club. Iglesias has also played for the Tigers, Reds and Orioles.

Colume (pronounced CALL'-uh-may), 33, has been both a closer and a set-up man in his time with the Rays, Mariners, White Sox and Twins.

Last year in 67 games with Minnesota, Colome was 4-4, with a 4.15 ERA and 17 saves. He gave up 68 hits in 65 innings, waked 23 and struck out 58.

He was an American League All-Star in 2016 and led the Major Leagues with 47 saves in 2017, his final season with Tampa Bay.

Colome is a nine-year veteran who has 155 career saves.

The Rockies also added outfielder Scott Shebler on a minor league deal on Saturday. The 31-year-old played 14 games with the Angels in 2021.

There is no question the Rockies needed to make a move at shortstop, given the impending departure of Trevor Story in free agency. And the Rockies hope Colome can help stabilize a bullpen that was inconsistent in 2021. He could, in fact, wind up as the club's closer.

Colorado still looks to add offense. The Rockies are in need of power in the outfield and with the addition of the designated hitter in the National League, they will try to invigorate a lineup that stagnated at times last season.
