Clint Hurdle is back with the Colorado Rockies.

Hurdle has rejoined the Rockies as a special assistant to general manager Bill Schmidt. Hurdle will begin his duties on January 1.

KOA Rockies Insider Tracy Ringolsby first reported the news on www.InsideTheSeams.com.

Hurdle served as the Rockies manager from 2002-2009. His teams went 534-625. The 534 wins are a record for a Rockies manager. He was the manager during the Rockies miraculous run to the 2007 World Series.

Prior to being named manager, Hurdle was the Rockies hitting coach from 1997-2002 and a roving hitting instructor from 1994-1996.

Hurdle went on to manage the Pittsburgh Pirates from 2011-2019, leading the Pirates to the playoffs in 2013, 2014 and 2015. He was National League Manager of the Year in 2013. In Hurdle's nine seasons with Pittsburgh, the Pirates were 735-720.

Hurdle was the first round pick (9th overall) of the Kansas City Royals in 1975. He played 10 Major League seasons with the Royals, Reds, Mets, and Cardinals.

COLORADO ROCKIES NAME CLINT HURDLE SPECIAL ASSISTANT TO THE GENERAL MANAGER

DENVER– The Colorado Rockies announced today that the club has named former Rockies manager and coach Clint Hurdle a special assistant to General Manager Bill Schmidt. In this role, Hurdle will assist with player development and the First-Year Player Draft.

“We are extremely excited to welcome back Clint Hurdle to the Rockies organization,” said Senior Vice President and General Manager Bill Schmidt. “Clint has a long history with the Rockies and in this game, and he brings a wealth of knowledge that will be incredibly valuable to this organization and our players.”

Hurdle returns to the Rockies having served as the club’s manager across parts of eight seasons from 2002-09, the longest tenured manager in franchise history. His 534 wins are the most as a manager in franchise history, and he stands as the only manager in franchise history to lead the club to a World Series (2007). Prior to being named the manager in April 2002, Hurdle served as the club’s hitting coach from 1997-2002 and as a roving hitting instructor from 1994-96.

“I am thrilled to return to an organization that I love,” said Hurdle. “I’m looking forward to working with Bill and his staff and helping out wherever they need me.”

After his departure from the Rockies, Hurdle managed the Pittsburgh Pirates from 2011-19, amassing 735 wins while being named the NL Manager of the Year in 2013. His 1,269 total wins as a manager rank as the 40th-most in Major League history. Hurdle’s coaching and managerial career began in 1988 with the New York Mets organization after a 10-year career as a player with the Kansas City Royals (1977-81), Cincinnati Reds (1982), New York Mets (1983, 1985, 1987) and St. Louis Cardinals (1986).
