Brandon McManus set a Denver Broncos record by making six field goals and the defense came up with three takeaways in the Broncos 18-12 win over the New England Patriots on Sunday at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough.
McManus broke the team's previous record of five with a 54-yarder with 37 seconds left in the third quarter. That gave the Broncos an 18-3 lead and, seemingly, control of the game at the same time.
But the Patriots came back to make it interesting.
Quarterback Cam Newton scored on a one-yard touchdown run with 8:31 left in the game. After the two-point conversion failed, the Patriots intercepted Broncos quarterback Drew Lock and turned that into Nick Folk's 38-yard field goal to make it 18-12 with 3:23 to go.
Another interception gave New England the ball back but the Broncos defense held on a 4th-and-10 pass that fell incomplete.
Quarterback Drew Lock returned from the shoulder injury he suffered against the Steelers in week two. Lock completed 10-of-24 passes for 189 yards and the two interceptions.
The Broncos also got running back Phillip Lindsay back in the lineup after a sustaining turf toe in the season opener on September 14.
Lindsay rushed for 101 yards on 23 carries.
