Broncos Fire Offensive Coordinator Rich Scangarello

Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello talks with reporters at UCHealth Training Center during the 2019 season.

The Denver Broncos have fired offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello after one year on the job, KOA Broncos Insider Brandon Krisztal has confirmed.

The news came down on Sunday afternoon.

Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network first reported the move.

Both Mike Garafolo and Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network report that former New York Giants head coach Pat Shurmur is expected be the Broncos new offensive coordinator. KOA NFL Insider Benjamin Allbright confirmed that Shurmur and the Broncos have a verbal agreement in place.

In a statement, Broncos head coach Vic Fangio said, "After a lot of consideration and discussion after the season, I determined that a change at offensive coordinator ultimately would be best for our team. We need to do everything we can to get better -- in all areas -- as we start working toward next year. Rich is a bright coach with a great future ahead of him. I appreciate all of his hard work and thank hi for his contributions to the Broncos."

Scangarello came over from the San Francisco 49ers when Vic Fangio became the Broncos head coach before the 2019 season.

This year, the Broncos used three different starting quarterbacks. Joe Flacco began the season and was the starter for the eight games until he sustained a neck injury. Brandon Allen then started three games before rookie Drew Lock was the starter for the final five games.

While the numbers were better with Lock as the starter, the Broncos offense still only averaged only 17.6 points per game during the 2019 season, 28th in the NFL. Their 298.6 yards per game also ranked 28th.

Prior to his time with the Broncos, Scangarello was the quarterbacks coach of the 49ers.

KOA Voice of the Broncos Dave Logan and color analyst Rick Lewis talked about the move.
