It turns out Mikko Rantanen was ready to go.

After agreeing to a new six-year, $55.5 million dollar contract last weekend, Rantanen started the regular season with a bang, scoring two goals in Thursday's 5-3 win over the Calgary Flames.

Joonas Donskoi scored the Avs first goal of the season at the 5:59 mark of the first period. After Calgary tied the game two-and-a-half minutes later, Rantanen scored a power play goal at 16:08.

Avs forward J.T. Compher broke a 2-2 tie at 12:22 of the second period and Rantanen scored his second goal of the night at 16:51.

Goalie Philipp Grubauer, after a shaky first couple of periods, settled down in the third and kept the Avs in the lead, spoiling a handful of quality scoring chances for the Flames.

Donskoi sealed the game by scoring his second goal with 1:09 remaining.

The Avs return to Pepsi Center to play Minnesota on Saturday, October 5.
