Federal investigators are actively interviewing witnesses in the case of Alex Pretti, who was shot and killed by U.S. Border Patrol agents in Minneapolis during Operation Metro Surge in January. According to Wynnie Savageford, a key witness, she provided a statement on Wednesday (September 9) to the FBI, Homeland Security, and the Minnesota U.S. Attorney's Office. Savageford claims she saw immigration agents shoot Pretti, an ICU nurse, during the operation.

The shooting has sparked a federal civil rights investigation, which began earlier this year. Pretti's attorneys have raised concerns about the level of cooperation between federal and state investigators. The investigation's details remain somewhat unclear, with the identities of the officers involved and the evidence being examined not fully disclosed.

Federal authorities, including the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI, are conducting multiple investigations into the shooting. However, there has been criticism regarding the handling of the investigation. The Associated Press reports that the FBI is only supporting the investigation by processing physical evidence, such as Pretti's gun, rather than leading a criminal civil rights investigation.

The situation has raised questions about the role of Homeland Security Investigations, which typically deals with cross-border issues, in leading the investigation. Just Security highlights concerns about the federal government's handling of the crime scene and the need for an independent investigation.

The lack of cooperation between federal and state investigators has been a point of contention. CNN reports that the FBI has refused to share information with Minnesota's Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, prompting a lawsuit for access to investigative material. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has called for impartial investigations into the shootings of American citizens.

As the investigation continues, the focus remains on determining whether the use of deadly force was justified and ensuring a thorough and unbiased examination of the events surrounding Pretti's death.
