5/20/25 Blog: MSU Finds Housing, And Weiser Spends Big On Trump

PAIRING YOUNG AND OLD TO SOLVE HOUSING PROBLEMS Is exactly what Metropolitan State University of Denver is doing in downtown Denver. I saw this article about the program that asks people over 55 who want to rent a room in their homes to take in college students who need affordable housing. I think this is a FANTASTIC idea and I've got Abbie Kell, MSU Denver associate director of Basic Needs and Housing Support on today to talk about this program at 12:30 pm. Read more about it here and here. If you're interested in renting to a student click here for more!

HOW MUCH IS AG PHIL WEISER SPENDING TO SUE TRUMP? Attorney General Phil Weiser has joined a slew of lawsuits (at last count it was 15 but today is another day) suing the Trump administration for a myriad of things he disagrees with on behalf of Colorado. I don't particularly want him to do any of this but he didn't ask me. I asked last week just how much he was spending to sue so many times, and Cory Gaines of the Colorado Accountability Project came to my rescue with this post outlining how many of our tax dollars he's using to do it. Cory joins me today at 1 to talk about it.

THE LAWSUITS ARE FLYING OVER SB1312 The bill called the Kelly Loving Act has created a firestorm of legal activity, the latest a suit from the Colorado Parents Action Network and Protect Kids Colorado among others. Read this:

I've got Erin Lee with Protect Kids Colorado on at 2:30 to comment. If you want to donate to the cause of protecting Colorado kids click here. I saw this yesterday online and I think that a backlash is building after years of growing tolerance and acceptance and that has me quite nervous.

I think generally most people are content to let others live their lives the way they see fit, as long as they don't infringe on the lives of others. We've crossed that rubicon repeatedly in Colorado. Cake baker Jack Philips has been harassed relentlessly by the gay and trans mafia, a website designer had to fight to NOT create a website she didn't want to create (think about that for a second) and now we've put MORE ammunition in the hands of activists to torture more people legally. This is going to undo years of progress and goodwill.

THE SUPREME COURT LIFTS PROTECTIONS FOR 300,000 VENEZUELANS During the Biden administration someone (couldn't have been Biden) decided that Venezuelans who walked across the southern border deserved protections from the horrible socialist government in their native land. Ironic that Democrats would love to create the same kind of government here, isn't it? That being said, now the Supreme Court says the Trump administration can lift that status and begin to deport Venezuelans again. If we were smart, we'd arm them to teeth and send them to take back their once thriving nation. Just saying. We can't take in every one from every failed nation. We'd be importing the same values that destroyed their country to ours, and I'm not down with that.

SIX COLORADO CITIES ARE SUING OVER POLIS'S WITHHELD FUNDS THREAT And of course this is how this was going to end up. So now a CRAP ton of taxpayer dollars are going to be used to fight for local control as the Governor borrows a tactic he's suing Trump over to bring cities into line. Read more here.

CAN YOU DEFEND YOURSELF AT WORK? This case is very interesting although this article explains the legal machinations that have ended with the Colorado Supreme Court ultimately making the decision. The case is that of a woman who was a Circle K employee who was faced with a man with two knives demanding free cigarettes. She says she was attacked and defended herself and Circle K says SHE was the aggressor so they fired her for violating their "Don't Chase or Confront" policy that makes it easier to steal from Circle K under the guise of protecting an employee. Now the case, which has been kicked between state and federal courts, will be heard by the Colorado Supreme Court. I hope the lady wins.

A SOROS FUNDED DA CRAPS ALL OVER JUSTICE I had the story on the blog a few weeks ago about a 14 year old boy stealing his mother's Jeep and then driving 90 miles an hour through a neighborhood until he slammed into another car, killing the woman inside. The Soros funded judge gave the kid probation. Now Jimmy Sengenberger is writing about how this judge fits right in with other judges in Arapahoe County more worried about protecting illegal immigrants than dispensing justice equally. But it's more than that, these judges have hired men who have both had serious issues with harassing staff that lead to complaints and even the resignation and firing of each of them. Padden is a George Soros, anti gun activist judge. How do I know? Her campaign donations tell the tale.

JARED POLIS HATES OUR AGRICULTURE INDUSTRY And he keeps making appointments of his friends who also hate agriculture and ranching to the very boards which oversee farming and ranching. Rachel Gabel writes about the latest disastrous appointment by Polis and how it will almost certainly negatively affect our ranching and agriculture industry. But I'm sure they can still go to Whole Foods to buy their food, the rest of us who rely on cheap food can simply go pound sand.

PETERS AND GRISWOLD ARE TWO SIDES OF THE SAME COIN According this column by Republican strategist Dick Wadhams. He's not wrong.

THE LUXURY BELIEFS ABOUT ENERGY IN BOULDER Jon Caldara writes a great column here reminding us of how fortunate we are to live in a world where we have reliable power on demand. It's not that way for a majority of people around the world, and we're the idiots trying to make ours LESS reliable. Read it here.

PROTESTS AGAINST HAMAS ARE HAPPENING IN GAZA And they are slowly but surely beginning to build. Hamas rules with more than an iron fist, and the Palestinian people have been subject to their whims since. Now more and more Palestinians are taking to the streets to demand Hamas leave. This is good news, but where are the Palestinians willing to rat out where the tunnel openings are? Or share information about the remaining hostages? I want the Palestinian people to live in freedom, but they need to do more than take to the streets, they need to join the fight. Unfortunately their hatred of Israel probably won't let that happen.

GEN Z ISN'T INTERESTED IN BOSSING This story is one of those where I think as these young people age things will change. I'll never forget the breathless stories about Millennials not moving the suburbs when they were in their 20s. At the time I said, let them have kids. When they did, guess where they moved? I think the same about this story of Gen Z eschewing the management track in favor of work-life balance. Okay. Sure. But when you work long enough to have enough horrible bosses who have been elevated for no apparent reason, it may change their minds.

THE ROOTS OF DEMENTIA START IN CHILDHOOD First off, the good news. Dementia is NOT an inevitable part of aging. Now the bad news, it may have already started years ago. This column explains how lots of health factors like obesity and hypertension can contribute to dementia, and the earlier they take hold the harder it is to stop. The biggest thing to do to stop dementia is regular exercise, healthy weight, and good blood pressure. It's not that hard, until you have to do it.

GOVERNMENT SPENDING JACKS UP MORTGAGE RATES This is not news but many people do not understand that mortgage rates are tied directly to Treasury bond rates. When Moody's downgraded the US credit rating because of exploding debt (something that honestly should have happened YEARS ago but Moody's is a political beast) it cause bond rates to rise, bringing mortgage rates with them. Because our debt is out of control, we have to pay people more to buy our debt, hence the increase in rates. Unless and until we get spending under control, this is going to be the new normal. Technically it's the Old Normal, as interest rates have traditionally averaged about 7%, which is what we're seeing now.

YOUR "A-HA" MOMENT CHANGED YOUR BRAIN This is super cool. Scientists have monitored brain activity in people learning something new. A research team found that when you have an "AHA!" moment, where something finally clicks, it's not just normal learning. From the article:

When you have an “Aha!” moment, your brain physically changes how it processes information, making these insights about twice as memorable as gradually learned information.

WHY YES, WE ARE LESS FREE And it's not just in the United States. We enjoy more freedoms here than most nations, though we've seen quite the erosion as of late. Reason.com has a good column on it here.

THE ROCKIES COULD BREAK ANOTHER RECORD And not a good one. If they don't win two of the next three, something they have failed to do at all this year, they will have the record for the worst 50 game start ever. Sigh.

WHY DOESN'T COLORADO SHORE UP ITS OWN EMA? Colorado Dems are asking DHS Secretary Kristi Noem to not mess with the Federal Emergency Management Agency when it comes to funding cuts. My question is, why not? Emergency Management should be done by each state, the way it has previously been done. If there is a multi state disaster a streamlined agency could coordinate, but FEMA generally does a lousy job assessing local needs anyway. Just ask the great folks from western North Carolina how effective that agency has been. Our state should be prepared to manage its own responses to our own emergencies. Yes, federal dollars can still flow when needed, but the added bureaucracy does not make things better.

TIME TO TAX VOLCANOES Because they spew WAY more CO2 into the atmosphere than we do. Read it here.

ANOTHER REASON FOR TRUMP TO NOT TAKE THE QATARI JET I don't care how many conservative pundits tell me this is fine, it is NOT fine. Now we know the owner of the offered Arab Force One (I think I made that up just now) has long ties to terrorism funding AND the Bob Menendez corruption trial. We don't need to be indebted in any way to this clown.

THIS IS THE WORST IDEA EVER And I mean EVER. Watch below or click here. We already have this game, and it's supposed to be military service.

APPARENTLY BLACK MEN ARE SUPPOSED TO MARRY BLACK WOMEN This is very 1955, don't you think?

RG3 isn't having it.

RYAN EDWARDS IS LOOKING FOR A BIT OF VALIDATION And of course he doesn't get that from his cohosts.

COULD A CEASEFIRE BE COMING IN UKRAINE? President Trump says negotiations will begin immediately after a long phone call with Vladimir Putin.
