Weds Blogcast: The oldest computer; Distracted driving; Colossal squid

Today's Guests

Dan Glaser is a GM Driver Distraction Engineer

Distracted driving killed three thousand people and caused more than 400-thousand injuries in the U.S. last year. Distracted driving isn’t just glancing at a phone. It’s rummaging for sunglasses, rubbernecking at another crash, adjusting the playlist, or yelling at your GPS.

April is distracted driving awareness month. Dan and I will discuss the problems that lead to distracted driving, what can be done to keep yourself and your teenaged drivers safe, how parents’ driving behaviors can negatively impact their children, and the technology that's being developed to keep drivers’ attention on the road

Tony Freeth is a mathematician and Managing Director, Images First Ltd—Film & TV Production. He's an honorary Professor, University College London and founding member of the UCL Antikythera Research Team.

We'll talk about an incredible device that some people call the world's oldest computer. And given how old it is (probably dating from about 100 BC), this device seems like one of the most incredible things ever produced by human ingenuity.

I note first that Zero Hedge is a sketchy place with sketchy and often pseudonymous writers, many writing as "Tyler Durden." One such person notes this: US Import Prices Tumble Despite China Tariffs | ZeroHedge

Here's the problem with this weird sort of victory lap. First, it's VERY early data and only covers a short time at much lower tariff rates than Trump has since implemented. Second, if it were in fact true that at some tariff rate, the foreign exporters will lower prices so that the final price to the American buyer isn't higher, or at least not much higher, than current price, then tariffs would not achieve Trump's stated goal of forcing manufacturing into the United States. So if this were true, and I suspect it will not remain true even if it was briefly, Trump would have to raise tariffs to make sure that Americans were paying more.
