4/8/25 Blog: A Class For Civic Engagement, And Travel With Points And Miles

LEARN THE RIGHT WAY TO ENGAGE WITH GOVERNMENT In a class on how to be more involved taught by my friend Kathleen Chandler from the Independence Institute. From the website:

The Citizen’s Guide to Civic Involvement workshop will help you see where and how you can make a difference in your community. This practical class will give you ideas and point you in a productive direction. Stop complaining and take back your country by taking back your community.

If you are tired of feeling powerless and ready to take action, sign up for the class here. Kathleen joins me at 1pm to talk about it.

WANT TO TRAVEL FOR PRACTICALLY NOTHING? We've got an app for that and it's called Travel Freely and it helps you utilize your points and miles programs from credit card companies for free travel. We've got the founder of the app Zac Hood on at 2:30 to talk about it. Find out more by clicking here.

CONGRATS TO JIMMY SENGENBERGER! He proposed to his long time girlfriend over the weekend and now he and Victoria are engaged!

JOIN THE GAYS AGAINST GROOMERS X SPACE TONIGHT AT 5:45 By clicking this link. They are talking about the ongoing attacks on parental rights in Colorado.

AURORA PD IS WOEFULLY UNDERSTAFFED And I'm glad Chief Todd Chamberlin is talking about staffing levels. From the Denver Gazette:

Police departments should be staffed at two officers per 1,000 community members, according to FBI standards. Aurora has about 1.7 officers per 1,000 community members, according to Chamberlain. Meanwhile, the national level is 2.4 officers per 1,000 and the state level is 2.2 officers per 1,000. Aurora has 748 officers for a city of 404,000 people, according to the most recent census data.

He's also not wrong when he says the population of Aurora is probably several tens of thousands LARGER than that number when you count illegal immigrants and the population of Buckley. Read the article to see what a change in leadership can mean for policing. It's refreshing.

DEMOCRAT ARROGANCE ON DISPLAY ON TRANSPARENCY Just yesterday I was talking about how the one party rule that we have here in Colorado leads to disaster and now here is a column about the many moves that Democrats have made to reduce transparency in Colorado. From extending the time for CORA requests to simply exempting themselves from open records requests for certain forms of communication, I can assure you if Republicans were doing this it would be front page news and the BIG STORY at 9News, as it SHOULD be. But it's Democrats doing it. This sort of disdain for the people they serve should make them politically vulnerable but they obviously don't feel that way. I can't wait for when Republicans get elected and the Democrats are stymied by their own rules. It will happen. Someday.

ROCKIES DO SOMETHING SMART And that is call up the King of Spring Training Zac Veen from the minors. Read it here, but if he performs as well as Chase Dolander did on Sunday we have reason to be excited. A few Rockies will also be trying out the new torpedo bats, but if they don't make contact the bats won't do much, will they?

COULD LONE TREE GET THE NEW BRONCOS STADIUM? This is a very interesting proposition, as there is a light rail station there, and I-25 and 470 intersect just above the site that Lone Tree officials seem to be dangling in front of the Broncos ownership, even though it is already marked for a large development project. Lone Tree leadership is pushing hard to get the attention of the Walton-Penner group as they decide where to build the next stadium. I just don't see the current site being large enough for them to get everything I think they want out of it. Aurora better get its ducks in a row if they want a chance. As a DougCo resident this would be my dream situation. Lest you think a move OUT of Denver is impossible, not so fast:

The Dallas Cowboys, for instance, play in Arlington, Texas, while the Buffalo Bills play in Orchard Park, N.Y. (with a new stadium under construction) and both the Los Angeles Chargers and Rams play in suburban Inglewood, Calif.
A similar situation to the Denver Broncos talk of moving out of Empower Field at Mile High — especially considering Lone Tree possibilities — is playing out in suburban Chicago.
The Chicago Bears, amid its stadium lease expiring, proposed moving to suburban Arlington Heights, located 25 miles northwest of downtown Chicago. There, the Bears proposed a $5 billion stadium district plan involving residential and commercial real estate at the 326-acre Arlington Park site, formerly a horse racing track.

We'll see what they decide to do, but I'm guessing some decisions will be made rather soon so the new joint can be ready when their lease with Mile High runs out.

THE ARTIST WHO DID THE TRUMP PAINTING SPEAKS OUT I've not talked about this because it is SO STUPID. Trump complained about his portrait that hangs in the Colorado State Capitol. He said it was distorted by the artist on purpose. Now the artist is speaking out and says his comments have ruined her business. This is sad to me. She says she didn't distort anything and the portrait hung in the Capitol for six years without issue. Do I think it's best portrait I've ever seen? No. But is it bad? Not at all, you can see all her portrait work here.

A BABY IN DENVER HAS MEASLES And she travelled with her family to Chihuahua, Mexico, where there is a considerable measles outbreak. Babies her age are not old enough for the measles vaccine. I hope she recovers fully.

THE HOUSE HAS FIGURED OUT A WAY TO LET NEW MOMS VOTE And this is a very reasonable accommodation that should have been made before. The only time this won't work is when the vote WON'T matter anyway. Now new moms will be able to cast a vote paired with a vote from the opposition, basically cancelling each other out, but allowing new moms to be on the record. Read more here, but now maybe Brittany Petterson can leave her baby at home and stop using him as a prop. The first time I was like, okay, but now she carts him around like a copy of the Constitution. It's getting absurd.

AN INTERESTING TREATMENT FOR PERSISTENTLY HIGH CHOLESTEROL This is not for you if you don't take care of yourself, but for people with genetically high cholesterol this sort of "oil change" can help dramatically. Read about Lipid Apherisis treatments here.

COLORADO KEEPS A DAD FROM PARENTING HIS TRANS SON This column is a real world example of when the State (Colorado) decides the ONLY path for a parent to pursue with a child struggling with their gender. That path is rushing to medicalize the child before they are legally old enough to even understand what that means. And now Colorado is trying to make it even harder for a parent to even suggest that perhaps their kid is just gay, or confused, or having a perfectly normal reaction to the physical changes around puberty. This is insane and totalitarian and horrible and I can't believe Colorado voters are okay with this.

THE DIRE WOLF IS BACK! And I'm sure bringing extinct animals back to life using DNA splicing techniques will be fine. This is sort of cool though.

THE LEGAL FIGHT AGAINST TRUMP'S TARIFFS Is just beginning to brew, but I've got this legal column on the tactics being used by those suing to stop him. The short answer is they are probably all fine because Congress has punted too much authority to the White House years ago.

TEXAS IS GOING AFTER PRIVATE HAPPY TIME And I genuinely don't understand this bit of business. Texas is trying to make people show id online before buying sex toys. Yep. This is what passes for the People's Business in the Lone Star State.

FYRE FESTIVAL 2 GOING ABOUT AS WELL AS EXPECTED And I can't believe this guy is doing this again. We're being punked. That's the only thing that makes sense. Watch below or click here.

WHEN BASEBALL LEADS TO A DARK PLACE What a powerful thing for Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran to admit. He has shared the story of how he tried to commit suicide after struggling as a major league baseball player. This seems so hard to believe as just playing in the majors is the dream of so many. Read it here and recognize that the powerful lying voices in someone's head telling them they are no good cross all boundaries. And those voices are lying. EVERY. Single. Time.

WALMART IS MESSING WITH PEOPLE'S EMOTIONS By selling "confetti eggs" in cartons that look like real eggs at a fraction of the price. There is a bad word in this one. Watch below or click here.

WHAT JOBS WILL AI KILL IN THE NEXT 20 YEARS? The only one I totally disagree with is journalism, because that simply requires a human touch. I do think journalism should lean hard into AI to lessen the load of journalists however they can.

WE NEED TO TREAT POLAND LIKE THE STAUNCH ALLY THEY ARE Some of the nations swept up in Trump's tariff mania simply don't deserve it, and one of them is Poland. This column lays out the way Poland has demonstrated they are truly one of our strongest allies.

X CRACKS DOWN ON PARODY ACCOUNTS Not to eliminate them, but to make them follow the rules about being a Parody account. You can find them here if you run a parody account.

THE FIRST BABY IS BORN AFTER A WOMB TRANSPLANT This is pretty incredible. A woman donated her womb to her sister who had tried everything to have a baby. It worked, and now the woman is a new mom to a baby girl named after the sister who made her possible. This is super cool. The most interesting part is that six months AFTER the birth the womb is removed to prevent the woman from having to take anti rejection drugs for the rest of her life.

CASA BONITA RESERVATIONS ARE OPEN AGAIN MONDAY for the summer season. Find out more here.

REMEMBER THAT TIME OBAMA CREATED DOGE AND PUT JOE BIDEN IN CHARGE? For real y'all. The reason why people are mad about Elon is he's actually DOING things and CUTTING things like the stuff laid out here by then President Obama.
