WHAT IS HAPPENING WITH COLORADO'S PARENTAL EVALUATION PROGRAM? Two recent stories are casting suspicion on the entire parental evaluation program used by the courts in child custody cases. These evaluators are hired at great expense by parents to meet with parents and assess the situation to make recommendations to the judges deciding these cases. They have TREMENDOUS sway over the outcome of custody hearings so it's important they are upstanding and unbiased. That is NOT what is happening with two different parental evaluators. This long story in the Denver Gazette actually shocked me with details of discriminatory behavior that put kids with parents with abuse and addiction histories. Now former Parental Evaluator Joyce Miller is a nightmare who needs to charged with SOMETHING after years of bias and incompetence that destroyed families and put children through unnecessary hell. And now we have a second parental evaluator who has been charged with lying about her credentials for the job. She has been charged. We're talking about people who have incredible power that will have lifelong impacts on children, someone needs to take over here and insure that more bad apples are not festering in the system.
A GROUP OF POLYGAMISTS TRIES TO STEAL FEDERAL LAND And I kind of feel like only in Colorado do we have these stories. A group called the Free Land Holders is trying to use very old treaties to claim the land in Montezuma County, putting them at odds with the Forest service as they just put up fencing and declared the land theirs. I'm sure this will end well.
SPEAKING OF WEIRD COLORADO STORIES Palmer Lake was given a gift they don't know what to do with by a cult that pulled up stakes and left town a few years ago. The aging compound needs a lot of work and the people of Palmer Lake can't seem to decide what to do with it. Read it all here.
COLORADO ROADS SUCK AND CDOT DOESN'T CARE We drove from the airport Friday to Black Hawk and ended up on some roads north of Denver that I don't normally drive on and HOLY COW you people who have to drive those roads every day must hate it. They are in terrible condition and totally suck. This column by Mark Millman about CDOT's criminal negligence of our roads as they try to force us all out of our cars is 100% correct. This is shameful and if we had a functioning Republican party they would be making a lot of noise about this. But we have Dave Williams so no.

COLFAX LOSES ANOTHER BUSINESS A Walgreens at Colfax and Havana is shutting down three months after the Walmart Neighborhood Market closed its doors and the neighbors say shoplifting is to blame. Walgreens says "increased regulatory and reimbursement pressures" lead the closing but the manager told a reporter that people get off the bus and come in to pillage at will. Why won't companies be honest when they shut down a location? That is the ONLY way things will ever change. If Walgreens had said, "we are shutting this store down because more is stolen than we sell" perhaps we could have a real conversation about doing something meaningful to fix it. Instead, we are just supposed to wonder I guess, when clearly there is a huge problem. And here's the thing, those thieves on buses will simply go to the next location and start pillaging there.
