8/12/24 Blog: Issues at Housing for the Homeless, Plus Michelle Zellner!

CAN WE TALK ABOUT FUSION STUDIOS? Fusion Studios provides permanent supportive and bridge housing to move people out of homelessness and into successful lives. One resident who is trying to get back on his feet has been sharing the problems there with me and others and I've asked Cathy Alderman, Chief Communications and Public Policy Officer to join me on the show to talk about it. From internet issues to people attacking other people while on drugs, Fusion hasn't shown to be the safe space many would hope for.

MICHELLE ZELLNER IS BACK! After a summer of travel and fun she's back to help us get back into a school and life routine for the fall. Find out more about Michelle and buy her GREAT book The You Revolution or take one of her classes by clicking here. Michelle is giving my listeners 50% off her YouUniversity courses if you use the promo code AUG2024 at checkout! Find them here.

ANOTHER BASIC INCOME PROGRAM LAUNCHES And this editorial is not happy about it, saying that universal basic income saps people of their drive and determination and they aren't wrong entirely. But what they are missing is that if we REPLACED all the welfare programs with a universal basic income program with no strings attached you change the game considerably. Don't believe me, listen to Milton Friedman, the libertarian, anti-big government economist extol the virtues of a universal basic income, though he calls it a negative income tax.

The problem is that no one believes they will dismantle the welfare state entirely as he suggests, merely add this to the pile of other stuff out there. Oh, an "no one" there is me, I don't believe it.

WE'LL BE AT THE DNC NEXT WEEK THANKS TO GOLDEN SPIKE ROOFING

THIS STORY ABOUT AURORA WATER IS CRAZY And goes to show exactly why the group in Douglas County called RWR is pushing so hard for a crazy water project down there. The long and short of it is it is a net benefit and ongoing source of taxpayer dollars for the people selling hard to get water with little to no oversight. Read these two stories about the ins and outs of a deal for polluted water from a mine shaft and how much money had been forked over by Aurora water rate payers since the deal was struck. It's insane and now Aurora is beholden to the sunk cost fallacy so they will keep shoving more money at these people. Part 1 of the story is here, and part 2 is here. I'm going to try to get David Migoya on the show to discuss it.

DENVER IS PUSHING IT'S RESTAURANT SCENE OUT This story should be setting off alarm bells in Denver but I'm sure they think other chefs will just ignore the lousy restaurant business climate in Denver and keep opening up restaurants. If you want to know what years of unfettered anti business rule in Denver looks like, read this. Y'all, these are the TOP chefs in Denver and they are looking and moving elsewhere. Imagine being an up and coming chef trying to get started here.

A BIG CHEER FOR MOE'S BROADWAY BAGELS For ending the tipping nightmare we've all become accustomed to now even though it's irritating as hell. They have done away with tipping at their stores and have given employees raises instead. If I'm ever in the area I'm stopping by just to say thanks.

PARENTS ARE SUING ADAMS COUNTY SCHOOLS FOR TRANSITIONING THEIR DAUGHTER And NOT telling the parents a single things about it. The girl, who went to a school counselor in the 27J district, was given access to online counseling about transitioning and began to use male pronouns at school, all without her parents knowledge. Her parents say she is now detransitioning and is on the path to a happier and healthier life as they rebuild their relationship that the school damaged. I hope they win big, these rules must be stopped.

HERE ARE SOME OF THE COOLEST THINGS MADE IN COLORADO I LOVE this contest so much, as I would have never known about most of these items were it not for the contest. See your finalists here.

INDEPENDENTS ARE TAKING OVER COLORADO And Dick Wadhams writes about it here. I'm hoping this will lead to the passing of some of the ballot initiatives like Initiative 310 that would create an open primary to encourage better, less extreme candidates to emerge.

THE SWEET CORN IS IN And here is some stuff to know about this year's Olathe sweet corn crop.

I DID NOT EMBARRASS MYSELF THROWING THE FIRST PITCH SATURDAY NIGHT And Arod made a super cool video of the whole experience. My favorite part is the call by Jack Corrigan and Jerry Schemmel!

PROTECT KIDS COLORADO ISN'T GOING ANYWHERE Even though their ballot initiatives didn't get over the finish line, the group says they will be back again to protect kids and kid's sports in Colorado. Read more here.

CLIMATE CHANGE ISN'T AS BIG A PROBLEM AS OUR DEBT And well duh. The Congressional Budget Office says that the national debt will curb economic growth by three times as much as climate change will in the near future. Read it here.

THE OLYMPICS ARE OVERISH And I say "ish" because there is still a bronze medal to be sorted out. Jordan Chiles, who was awarded a medal after filing an inquiry about her score at the Games, was stripped of her medal after IOC officials says her coach filed the inquiry four SECONDS late at the meet. That being said, US Olympics did this:

"The time-stamped, video evidence submitted by USA Gymnastics Sunday evening shows Landi first stated her request to file an inquiry at the inquiry table 47 seconds after the score is posted, followed by a second statement 55 seconds after the score was originally posted."

What a mess and roller coaster of emotions for Chiles and the Romanian gymnast in question. What a mess.

CONGRATS TO THESE COLORADANS WHO WON MEDALS! I am so proud of these Coloradans who won medals at these games!

WHAT OLYMPIC SPORTS CAN SHOW THEMSELVES OUT? For the record, I strongly disagree with SEVERAL of these. Race walking is my best chance of making the Olympics to I want that to stay. Honestly I could live without Judo, which I find super boring. Read the rest here.

AND NOW, A PANDA WITH NEW TOYS Because why not.

YES, TOO MUCH CAFFEINE CAN KILL YOU And Panera Bread is facing lawsuits after their super caffeine charged drinks have been connected to two deaths and several cardiac events. Y'all, you do NOT need a super charged caffeine drink you need exercise and good sleep. Trust me on this.

LESS ATTRACTIVE PEOPLE DIE SOONER But not THAT much sooner so if you aren't the best looking person ever don't worry. Just maintain positive relationships with people and you'll be as fine as those good looking jokers.

THIS RAW DOGGING THING IS GETTING BEYOND STUPID As dudes (women don't seem to have the same need to be praised for just thinking) are posting about long flights they take with no distractions, including eating or drinking or reading or watching a movie. It's the no eating or drinking or using the bathroom that is just stupid. And we have reached a point in our deteriorating world where people on the internet want kudos for THINKING. We are truly living in Idiocracy.

UKRAINE ROLLS INTO RUSSIA And I'm guessing Vlad didn't see this coming. Russia is vowing to kick out Ukrainian forces that have rolled 30 km into Russia in an offensive.

CHEESE IS ON ITS WAY OUT As the government, who is notoriously bad at giving nutrition advice, is studying exactly how much dairy we need in our diet and brace yourselves, it may be zero. From the Wall Street Journal:

The U.S. government, which recommends that adults eat three servings of dairy a day, is taking a fresh look at its guidance. A committee of scientific advisers is analyzing diets with lower amounts of dairy to study what happens to people’s nutrient levels. That is the first step toward possibly changing the recommendation in the next update of the country’s dietary guidelines. Other countries already recommend less dairy than the U.S. does.
The problem? Dairy-rich diets have been linked to increased risks of cardiovascular disease and certain cancers in some studies. Foods like ice cream, full-fat cheese and pizza are high in calories and saturated fat.
However, the research isn’t clear-cut. Some studies link dairy foods to a lower risk of heart disease, some cancers and Type 2 diabetes. When it comes to milk, scientists can’t agree on whether full fat or skim is better.

Long story short, they don't know so eat the cheese.
