Just One Thing: Arizona abortion ruling should scare GOP

Conservatives who care only about stopping abortion will be cheering. Conservatives who care about winning elections should be pretty nervous today. Yesterday the Arizona State Supreme Court ruled that since Roe v Wade was overturned, an 1864 state law makes a felony of performing an abortion or helping a woman get one. The court ruled that the older law superseded a 15-week ban passed two years ago. If nothing changes on the legislative front in Arizona by November, I expect Republicans, who already have a VERY weak Senate candidate in Kari Lake, to be absolutely crushed, perhaps enough to cost Trump the state as well even though every recent poll has him leading. Lake knows it: She’s criticizing the court ruling even though she supported the pre-statehood law two years ago. Abortion is VERY bad politics for the GOP.

Today's Guests

Chris Cuomo hosts "Cuomo" on NewsNation weeknights at 6 PM MT. It's the only cable news show I know that takes callers. He's a long-time fixture on cable news who likely needs no further introduction. We'll discuss Chri's strong belief that the nation is not as divided as politicians (and many in the media) want us to believe it is. I understand the argument and I'd like to believe it but I think it's less true with each passing month or year.

Special edition of the show tonight is called "Trading Up – with Mike Rowe”

The concept: With skyrocketing costs of university tuition and out of control student loan debt, many young people are wondering how they’ll ever succeed. Some have found the ‘open secret’: trade school!

You can find out how to watch in your area by visiting www.JoinNN.com.

Recently on Chris's show, a topic we'll talk about today (because I didn't get to it yesterday):

--------

Deborah Flora is a candidate for Congress, running for the 4th Congressional district. At this point probably her main competitor, who is probably in the lead given name recognition and money, is Lauren Boebert.

--------

Joe Brunner is the guy I buy ALL my bourbon and scotch from. The man is an encyclopedia of this stuff. He's the owner of Lukas Liquors in Lone Tree (next to the Home Depot near Park Meadows Mall.) We'll discuss a bill at the state legislature that looks to re-restrict the sale of hard liquor to liquor stores (so that supermarkets and convenience stores basically can't sell anything stronger than wine.) With the massive struggles for the liquor industry due to a downturn in drinking post-COVID and more generally among this generation of young adults, what is the future of independent liquor stores and will this bill help if it passes?
