LET'S TALK ABOUT THE SUPERBOWL FOR A HOT MINUTE Because our own Brandon Kristal is at the game and he's going to join me at 12:35 to give us a little flavor is what's happening in Arizona.
IT'S HARD WHEN SOMEONE SAYS THE TRUTH BUT IT'S NOT WHAT PEOPLE WANT TO HEAR A man named Kevin Lorusso has created a kerfuffle with his testimony at the Capitol about guns. What did he do? He correctly pointed out that the numbers of children killed by guns is distorted by the large number of black boys who are killed by gun violence. Lorusso was seeking to make statistics on child deaths clearer when he said:
"If you remove Black males in that age group from that group, it is not true," he said. "That is a symptom of a different issue. The issue that is causing young Black males to be killed in their homes, on their streets, is a very different issue."
Sadly, he's not wrong. He's exactly right which is why this caused a kerfuffle. When talking about child deaths via gun violence, one must include the death of a 12 year old boy who first stole a car and then was shot by the owner when someone in the car shot at the owner. That is hardly the gun's fault. Of course he was decried as racist and this article from HuffPo wants you to believe it is the systemic racism in black communities that causes these deaths spontaneously rather than the culture of violence that has infested those same communities. I do want to be clear that the deaths of young black men in our country is a genocide that must be stopped, but he's not wrong in pointing out that these deaths are disproportionately on one category of kids, many of them caught up in or directly involved in gang violence. It's not racist when it's true. Stats aren't racist.
XCEL'S PROFITS HERE ARE HIGHER THAN OTHER PLACES THEY OPERATE And thanks to CBS for doing this story talking about the conflict between a publicly traded company and ratepayers they are supposed to protect. Now the Public Utilities Commission is trying to figure out how to undo the damage that they themselves have done by approving every single rate increase that Xcel has asked for. This is a perfect story about when the foxes run the henhouse when the chickens come home to roost. Jared Polis and John Hickenlooper appointed green energy former energy company execs to the PUC so what did they expect would happen? Exactly what is happening now, so please place your ire appropriately. This editorial from the Denver Gazette reminds us of just how anti-low cost energy Polis is.
SOME SANITY EMERGED IN LAST NIGHT DENVER MAYOR DEBATE AT least about rent control, which the front runners all rejected because they understand how it distorts the real estate market. Read here to see the candidates who should be non-starters because of their lack of basic economic understanding about it.
WHEN PLANS TO HELP THE HOMELESS MEET REALITY Good for CBS 4 for doing this story about an old hotel that the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless bought for people living on the streets and the failure of their promises about it as they prepare to do more of the same at another old hotel they just bought. The old Clarion hotel is being converted housing, and the Coalition says:
The coalition purchased the building in December for $24 million, using federal, state and local funds. The transformation plans include onsite services to address mental health, health, and addiction issues. It's based on the housing first model, which comes with little to no requirements for getting and staying in the units.
So what is happening at their other property where they said the same things would happen? Police have been called 500 times every year it's been open, the offices for those "wraparound" services are empty. MIKE PENCE HAS BEEN SUBPOENAED And there is no doubt in my mind he will tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth when he talks to the Special Counsel investigating Trump. It will be interesting to see if he fights the subpoena, which would be a bad, bad political move if he's planning to run for POTUS again. He needs to scrape as much Trump off of him as he can in that case.
