The January 6th Committee made a symbolic big splash yesterday with a unanimous vote to subpoena former President Trump, arguing that he’s really the person not only with the most knowledge about his own behavior but perhaps about planning by the rioters. On his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump asked “why did they wait until the very end, the final moments of their last meeting” to ask him to testify. It’s a reasonable question but it also doesn’t matter because even if he really wanted the chance to get in front of TV cameras, something which has always appealed to The Donald, there is absolutely no way his lawyers would have let him go. And he won’t. The committee has already brought forward truly damning evidence against Trump. They needn’t have ended their public work with a gimmick.

Will the federal gov't try to block a merger between Kroger and Albertsons? Coloradans might not know that Albertsons owns Safeway. (They own lots of other store chains as well, like Vons, but Safeway is by far the best known in Colorado.) I typically favor mergers and I'm not saying I definitely don't favor this one but it sure is hard to think of a merger of King Soopers and Safeway as anything but anti-competitive even with the presence of Walmart (where I really don't like shopping for food and in fact don't even think the prices are particularly good, and certainly not good compared to sale prices at the other places.)

Assuming I'm reading the report and this article correctly, they're arguing that 13.5% of Colorado voters overall and 30.7% of voters 25 years old or younger self-identify as LGBTQ. That's literally impossible.

Yesterday a federal judge ruled that based on the requirements of the Bruen case decided by the Supreme Court earlier this year, requirements that firearms have a legible serial number are unconstitutional. Below are two articles, the first by a typical anti-gun liberal (but who writes quite well) and the second by a highly respected constitutional law professor. Importantly, the latter, Eugene Volokh, explains clearly why he thinks the judge is wrong and should be overturned on appeal. Here's what I wonder: If the 4th Circuit upholds the lower court and if no other Court of Appeals decides a similar case in the opposite way, will the Supreme Court grant cert (agree to hear the case) if the government appeals to them? I can easily imagine the Supreme Court overturning this ruling, with Roberts and Kavanaugh joining the 3 liberals in a 5-4 decision.
