Hot start. Hang on.

That combination worked well for the Colorado Avalanche on Friday night in a 5-3 win over the San Jose Sharks in the Bay Area.

The Avs jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first 24:31 of the game behind goals by Nazem Kadri, Darren Helm, Cale Makar and Valeri Nichushkin.

The Sharks answered with three straight goals and they were within 4-3 at 18:35 of the third period.

But Nichushkin sealed it up with an empty net goal with 15 seconds remaining.

Along with the four different goal scorers, Nathan MacKinnon had three assists for the Avalanche and Makar added a pair.

Colorado has now won three consecutive games.
