Accused Planned Parenthood Shooter in Federal Custody

A new federal indictment is charging Robert Dear with 68 counts in a 2015 attack on a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado Springs. Three people were killed and Dear was arrested after a five hour standoff in which he fired 198 bullets.

Federal prosecutors say Dear planned to wage war on the clinic and came equipped with four SKS rifles, five handguns, two additional rifles, a shotgun, more than 500 rounds of ammunition and propane tanks.

Dear has been housed at the State Mental Hospital in Pueblo where he was sent for competency evaluations. At hearings, he had been wide-eyed while asking that he be able to represent himself. He has yet to be ruled competent.

Now, after four years of delay, federal prosecutors have stepped into the case.

On Monday morning, Dear was removed from Pueblo and is now in federal custody. He faces three murder charges and 65 counts of violating the federal Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act.

The federal prosecutors have not decided if they will seek the death penalty.
